Introducing Berkhamsted Raiders CFC, a 96-team England Football Accredited Community Club with a rich history dating back to 1996. Over the years, the club has built a reputation for both on-pitch success and its commitment to the local community.

That commitment has driven steady, sustainable growth, with the club expanding fourfold since 2008.

Behind that growth is a strong network of people. From trustees and coaches to committee members and parent volunteers, everyone plays a role in shaping the club’s culture. It’s a shared effort, built around a clear ethos of “excellence in the community and excellence on the pitch”.

A club that offers more than just football

While football is at the heart of Berkhamsted Raiders, what sets the club apart is the breadth of experiences it offers.

Beyond weekly training and matches, the club has developed a wide range of opportunities for players and families to stay engaged throughout the year. From goalkeeper training and futsal to holiday camps and matchday experiences with Watford FC, these initiatives create additional touchpoints that keep players connected and motivated.

This approach allows the club to support different interests, abilities, and stages of development. It also helps strengthen the sense of belonging, giving families more ways to engage with the club beyond their regular sessions.

Bringing the community together through events

Large-scale events play a central role in the club’s identity.

The annual summer football tournament is a standout example, regularly welcoming around 5,000 attendees and 250 teams. It’s not just a competition, it’s a community event that brings together players, families, and supporters from across the region.

These events require significant coordination and rely heavily on the club’s volunteer network. With over 200 volunteers contributing their time and energy, it highlights just how important community involvement is to the club’s success.

More than anything, these events create shared experiences. They give players something to work towards and families something to be part of, strengthening the connection people feel to the club.

Giving back in meaningful ways

Berkhamsted Raiders’ impact goes well beyond football.

One of the most important initiatives the club runs is the bi-annual CRY Heart Screening Day. This event holds deep personal significance, following the loss of two players, Harry Faulkner and Alex Hubbard, to undiagnosed heart conditions.

In response, the club created an opportunity to support its community in a meaningful and lasting way.

The screening day provides young people with access to free ECG testing, delivered by trained medical professionals. It’s a simple but powerful initiative that has the potential to save lives, while also raising awareness across the wider community.

The event is fully funded through the club’s fundraising efforts, ensuring it remains accessible to all. It reflects a deeper purpose that sits at the heart of Berkhamsted Raiders: supporting people, not just players.

Expanding opportunities through new programmes

As the club has grown, it has continued to evolve its offer to meet the needs of its members.

Futsal has become a key part of this. The fast-paced, small-sided format supports technical development and gives players a different way to engage with the game. With teams spanning from U6 to U18, it has quickly become an important addition to the club’s pathway.

Alongside futsal, holiday camps and specialist sessions provide further opportunities for players to stay active and engaged outside of the regular season. These programmes help maintain momentum throughout the year and give families more flexibility in how they participate.

Supporting the people who make it happen

Like many grassroots clubs, Berkhamsted Raiders has faced challenges as it has grown. One of the most recent was a shortage of referees.

Rather than seeing this as a barrier, the club approached it as an opportunity to develop people within its own community.

They introduced referee training for older players, giving them a pathway to stay involved in the sport in a new way. At the same time, they launched a fully funded referee training initiative for individuals in the local community who might not otherwise have had access to the opportunity.

These initiatives didn’t just solve a short-term issue. They created long-term value by building skills, confidence, and involvement across the club and its wider network.
