Supporting a growing football community

With more than 350 players across 32 teams, Southwell City FC has built a strong community around football in Nottinghamshire. From young children starting out in the game to adult and veteran teams, the club has created an environment where players and families feel welcome, supported and part of something bigger.

Today, the club feels more connected across its teams, volunteers have a clearer structure around them and there is more confidence in how things operate across the season.

For Chairman John Cunningham and the wider volunteer team, that has created more space to focus on what matters most at grassroots level, supporting players, developing the club environment and helping the club continue moving forward.

Giving volunteers more time to focus on the club

Like many grassroots clubs, Southwell City FC had grown steadily over the years. But as more teams and families became involved, different processes started appearing across the club, making it harder to keep everything consistent.

Communication, player information and team organisation were often handled differently from one team to another, which created extra pressure for volunteers trying to keep things running smoothly.

John described it as, “A logistical nightmare at times.”

By introducing clearer ways of working across the club, volunteers now spend less time trying to stay on top of day-to-day pressures behind the scenes and more time focusing on players, teams and the wider club community.

Creating more confidence across the season

One of the biggest changes for Southwell City FC has been having a clearer picture across the whole club.

With so many teams involved, that visibility has helped the committee feel more confident when planning ahead, supporting teams and making decisions that benefit the club long term.

That longer-term confidence recently helped support improvements to the clubhouse, creating a better experience for players, parents and the wider community around the club.

For grassroots clubs, creating stability is often less about rapid growth and more about making sure the club feels manageable, sustainable and ready for the future.

Keeping players, families and volunteers connected

Strong communication plays a huge role in helping grassroots clubs feel organised and connected, especially when so many volunteers, parents and players are involved across the season.

Southwell City FC has found it much easier to keep everyone informed consistently, helping volunteers feel more aligned and reducing some of the pressure that naturally builds throughout the year.

That consistency has helped create a stronger experience across the whole club, not just for coaches and committee members, but for families too.
